What Are Dental Implants?

When the tooth and its root are completely damaged, the best permanent solution is a dental implant. The dental implant is similar to a screw or rod that is made of Titanium. Titanium is material that is very biocompatible with the human body and is used in other aspects of medicine such as knee replacements. Dental implants can be placed at the time of the extraction or after the extraction when the area is fully healed. Dental implants can be placed in the upper and lower jaw. After the implant is placed, it will take two to three months for the implant to completely fuse with the surrounding bone. This period is considered the healing period for the dental implant. After the healing period is over, an impression is taken and the crown is placed on the implant. At Euclid Dental Center, we will place and restore the dental implant all in our own office.

When considering dental implants, we use a special x-ray called a CT scan to measure the surrounding bone structure to determine the size and width of the implant that we want to use. The CT scan is a three dimensional image that allows us to completely visualize the area that we want to place the implant in. CT scans prior to implant placement are now considered standard of care. At Euclid Dental Center, we have an in-house CT scan machine that we allow us to quickly evaluate your situation and provide you with optimum care at your convenience.

Implant Overdentures

Dental implants have completely revolutionized the dental field in the past 40 years. One of the main benefits of dental implants is stabilizing traditional dentures that keep moving around. With dental implants, patients can stop using denture glue constantly to stabilize their denture. With just two implants, patients can convert their traditional denture to an implant overdenture that fits on top of the implants. Here are some important benefits of implant over dentures.

Psychological and Social Benefits

Psychosocial benefits include improved appearance, patient satisfaction and quality of life.

Functional Benefits

Patients with implant overdentures have an increased biting force compared with patients who wear conventional complete dentures, and thus their ability to chew food improves. As a result, they can eat a broader array of food choices and this has a positive impact on nutrition and the intake of healthy, harder-to-chew foods.

Anatomical/Biological Benefits

When patients lose all their teeth and have to wear complete dentures it results in continued bone loss. Due to the pressure of the denture on the underlying bone, overtime it gets difficult to comfortably wear dentures. Patients with implant overdentures experience less bone loss over time than they would have with conventional complete dentures (ie. no implants). In addition, patients with dental implants will have less atrophy of the muscles around the mouth due to the stability of the dentures that allows for greater muscle activity without displacing the denture.
